WELL. SORRY IT'S HORRIBLE XD

this is my first test at action script, programming in flash

I'll try the get the jump to work at just a tap instead holding it down lD

I put the animations needed for the game on top for anyone interested ^_^

Sprites by my good bud - :iconmattx17:

He took the ripped sprites from Digimon Spirit. And then changed the colors of every single one of them.

The only problem I see here is that if you let go of the jump the jump just stops. It doesn't complete the jump cycle and you just fall depending on when you let go. I know nothing about action script or coding so this is just coming from a gamer. And that sort of problem would be big in a finished product. I only stumbled on this Deviation so I don't know if you have an updated version of this but I just thought I'd let you know. :3

Other than that problem everything is put together nicely and it flows wonderfully.

Thanks! ^^ Yeah, I actually lost this file a long time ago :/ and I really don't know much about coding ^^; but if I ever choose to make another, I'll be sure to fix those problems ;)

Cool glad I could help though I'm sorry to hear about the loss of the file.
I know what that's like. I had an external hard drive that met with the cement floor thanks to a cat. =.=

I'm guessing you've got all the animations as movieclips. Why not have the animation in just the sprites "main" movieclip and change your coding from gotoAndStop("jumping"); to gotoAndPlay("jumping"); ?

Then if you need to be able to move while jumping a couple "if" and "else functions should help.
Eg; when on the jumping frame have jumping = true
then on the main code in the move left and right sections have
if (root.jumping == true) {
root.character.x+=5
} else {
if (root.jumping == false) {
root.character.x+=5
root.character.gotoAndStop("running")
}
}

I mainly use actionscript 2 myself, so I'm not too sure if this translates 100%. Its been a while since I bothered with actionscript 3. Need to get back into it.

Hope this helps.

Well I guess you've got all the "action" movieclips inside a parent movieclip (with each action in a new frame), right?

Rather than having the jumping movieclip on a frame in the main character movieclip play the jump animation along the timeline in the parent movieclip.

so you can still have your run/walk,attack,whatever animation movieclips on their respective frame but rather than doing this with the jump movieclip copy the frames from it and put them into the "parent" movieclip of your character.
That way instead of having a gotoAndStop() for it have a gotoAndPlay() action so it plays it in the character timeline. I can make you an example if you need.

As for the if functions,On your main game frame put "jumping = false" or "var jumping = false" (cant remember if you have to specify with as3.) On the first jumping frame (which you'll likely call jump or jumping, whatever) put the code on the frame "root.jumping = true" and on the last frame put "root.jumping = false" then where you've programmed the moving left and right actions have some code like the following (after the check if the key is down/pressed)
if (root.jumping == false) {
root.character.gotoAndStop("walk")
root.character.x+=5
} else {
if (root.jumping == true) {
root.character.x+=5
}
}

If you cant make sense of my ramblings here send me a note :)

It would be better if moving forward wouldn't cut off the jumping motion... Or if you could jump while moving. :D This is very good! I hope you can make some progress in this game, and possibly give it a story! :) I'd love to see that from you!

Wow, looks awesome! I am very interested in learning how to do that, can you upload or point towards the code you used? A tutorial on this would be greatly greatly appreciated, too! Only thing to point out is releasing the jump key in the middle of the jump, as it makes the character pop off from the air and back on already on the ground. He should complete the jump in despite of the key being released or not.

I look very forward to further updates on this.

WOW THANKS! :D

I followed this really great tutorial (and added some custom stuff too) and it showed how to make something like this: [link]

the code is complicated to say the least:
hero.gotoAndStop('still');

var Key:KeyObject = new KeyObject(stage);

stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,onenter);

function onenter(e:Event):void{

if(Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)){
hero.x+=12;
hero.scaleX=+1;
hero.gotoAndStop('walking');
}else if(Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)){
hero.x-=12;
hero.scaleX=-1;
hero.gotoAndStop('walking');
}else if(Key.isDown(Key.UP)){
hero.gotoAndStop('jumping');
}else{
hero.gotoAndStop('still');

}
}

and I think there's more too, but I'm not going to spam with you with that XD

I'm trying to fix that problem you stated, I think I know how >_> never sure with these things though XD

well, THANKS AGAIN!

I think you're better animator than me, I'd love to see a game from you, though I don't I can show you much lD

I advise searching around youtube and google for action script tutorials if that's what you're looking for, there's really good ones out there ;)

good luck! great art and animation ;)

This is my folder for game-related artwork. [link]

Although I am an amateur actionscript coder and been doing Flash stuff on my own, i don't have the efficiency needed to develop games as a whole, and have to rely on code chunks i find online, mostly from FlashKit. I might be looking also in YouTube.
